It can be asked which subsequent image might dislodge the Crucifixion from the vertiginous centrality it now, slightly awkwardly, inhabits, and from where it promises eternity, what further symmetries would be symmetrical with the ideological confrontation in the ‘Triumph…’. What image or family of images might claim to replace the crucifix, in our times of serial processing of attention and emotion.
